To introduce myself, I use vbox primarily to run Devuan Linux in a Windows
laptop host. That enables me to access my other computers from home, or
when I am on the road, using ssh, and I can take advantage of the the ease
with which the host uses wifi, given that most providers assume that they
will be dealing with Windows.
I recently upgraded Virtual Box to the latest version 6, and the process
was reasonably transparent, and had no effects on my guest virtual
machine. I make use of a shared folder, to help communication between
machines, and so it was necessary to upgrade vbox Guest Additions in order
to compile necessary kernel modules (my Devuan guest machine was also
upgraded). Everything works well, and modules for each kernel were
generated, but now there is a strange pause in the guest machine boot
process which I do not understand, and which I think should not be
happening.
The boot process gets to the point where it is about to load kernel
modules, and then it hangs for as much as a couple of minutes. It reports
that it is compiling kernel modules, then says it is restarting. In fact
it does NOT recompile the modules, as can be determined from their time
stamps, and it would take a longer delay, if it were doing so. But there
is some unexplained pause in the process, possibly because it can not
immediately find the modules, or because I have not dealt with them
properly in config files. The delay is mildly annoying, but the messages
are obviously misleading and not helpful.
I am interested to hear if other users have this problem, and also of
course what can be done to fix it.
