Hello list! First post here. I have a somewhat older laptop, there's still Win7 64 on it, so far never problems with it, though, and it worked well enough to have a bunch of Linux VMs and try stuf out. The Samsung EVO SSD in it is ~ a year old, CrystalDiskInfo says 99% lifetime left, no warnings, chkdsk finds nothing wrong either, and I do not have any trouble with the rest of the drive.
But when I tried to copy the folder of one virtualbox VM with a ~ 28GB vdi file in it, after a couple GB it would always give me a bluescreen / reboot. But the VM still works fine (although I have not plowed through the disk space from within that Debian11 inside there, only about 5% or so of the alotted size are used) The VM was not running when I attempted the copies. I tried both, to compress with 7z to the same drive, but also, copy to external HDD. It's not writing, it really crashes just from reading. The crash dump all have hthe code for DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Sounds like HW failure, but I never have trouble unless I try to copy the VM folder again. (there are still 300 GB free on that 1TB drive). Also at one of the crash entries, according to the Microsoft site, the parameter2 meant an SCSI problem, eh, I don't have SCSI ;) So who knows what this actually means. Now interesting: Out of 5 crashes, one had "VBoxDrv.sys" mentioned as the culprit. But the others had either ntoskrnl.exe (3 times) or Ntfs.sys (1 time). I just installed the newest version of VirtualBox. Attempted a copy to external HDD - so, it did give me a crash again, but I noticed that this time, all the big files are on the external drive, only the log folder is missing this time. Weird. (previously, trying to copy only the .vdi file gave me the crash, though) I have not tried anything further since.
