I have installed Virtualbox on two PC's, both running Ubuntu. On one it
installed without trouble, though Virtualbox hangs when I try to start a
virtual PC. (I may post on this separately)

More urgently though, on my home computer the installer complained about
an unknown kernel version, even though that computer is ALSO an
up-to-date Ubuntu Edgy installation, similar to the PC that VirtualBox
installed on correctly. (Possibly Virtual box THINKS it's different
because of the different meta package name: linux-386 vs
linux-generic..)

Anyway, I have bigger things to worry about at the moment, because
apt-get / Synaptic completely doesn't work anymore. I can't install or
uninstall anything, not even regular system updates.

Virtualbox seems half-way installed.

This is what happens when I try to uninstall Virtualbox:

--
> $ sudo apt-get remove virtualbox
> Reading package lists... Done
> Building dependency tree
> Reading state information... Done
> E: The package virtualbox needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an
> archive for it.

--

I search further for this error, but I simply cannot get it uninstalled
(or INstalled, anything that would get me a working package management
system back). For example I tried

> sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq virtualbox

But again this didn't work.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Chanchao
