I'm aware that this isn't quite the ideal place for some basic Linux
questions, but I'm hoping for some leniency.

Since VirtalBox isn't available (yet) for an OS/2 host, I'd like to
additionally install the current Ubuntu beta on my OS/2 box to have a
playground for it, but still am a Linux novice. So I'd like to get some advice
about reasonable sizes and numbers of required/advised partitions for it.

I have 768MB of memory installed and currently some 10GB of free HD space,
which by doing some clean-up, I might be able to squeeze out close to
additional 5GB, if absolutely need to be.
I indent to keep OS/2 as my main system with its boot manager, but would like
to set-up Ubuntu mainly in such a way, that it mainly complements programs
which are not available at all for OS/2 or not in current versions anymore
(like OO.org, SM with MM plugins, video-player) and to get familiar with it
and not in a full-fledged super-duper way.

From what I understand thus far, one should have: swap, root and home
partitions. Is there also a Boot partition required, to keep some essential
start-up (grub?) files below the infamous 8GB (BIOS?) limit?

So, in my case what partition sizes and file systems are recommended and can I
read (and possibly write to) my existing HPFS partitions and is there a
version of JFS available, that is r(/w) compatible with IBM's JFS for OS/2, to
be able to exchange data between both systems?
Would there be good reasons against the use of JFS compared to ext2(/3) or one
of those other existing file systems?
