Hello Daniel,

I would guess that those errors in the log are not related to your 
problem, and that you are trying to use the Ubuntu SMP kernel in the 
guest (if you installed the server version of Ubuntu, the SMP kernel 
will be installed by defualt).  Unfortunately, that kernel has a bug, 
which often causes it to fail to boot with the symptoms which you 
described.  Ubuntu are aware of the bug 
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/83716) 
and claim to have fixed it, but the fix has still not appeared in the 
repositories.  In the meantime, you could try installing the desktop 
version of Ubuntu for now if you are using the server version, and using 
the non-SMP kernel.
