I have the same "environment", Ubuntu 7.04 as Host and Xp as Guest,
with no problems.  Just in case, check how much memory you are
assigning to you VM and your real memory (some useful command are
free, ps and top, and the System Monitor from Gnome).

Also check your log files. From the directory you've installed your
VM's (your home directory by default) do:

tail -f .VirtualBox/Machines/Windows\ XP/Logs/VBox.log

Substitute "Windows\ XP" with the name of your Windows XP VM Guest.

Maybe things way you'll be able to track your problem down!!
