Yeah, I can start that way, and comment out the line you mention in the
xorg.conf file, no change, mouse is still funky.

Unrelated, but I just had a weird experience. I started with the
Linux--safe settings option, and it refused to log me in as root,
rejected my password, which I know is good. I could log in as user. A
restart to the x login screen allowed a root login, accepting the password.
