I can't tell you what is wrong with the GUI launch of the XPVM but I can
report that mine does the same thing on a Ubuntu machine with an XP
guest. I read on one of the forums that re-trying the menu start right
after th.e first attempt will get the VM working. I have found this to
be true about 50 or 60% of the time. When the GUI starts correctly I am
able to make the changes I need. VBoxManage will also allow you to set
most of the parameters you need and then start the VM from a terminal
window.
