I suppose you both will not access the .vdi image at the same time. Therefore I suggest to put the .vdi image to a folder which is accessible by both of you and create a VM for each user with the same content. Another way would be to set VBOX_USER_HOME=<your home directory>/.VirtualBox in the initialization script of your girl friend. Especially the latter would be very dangerous if you two would work simultaneously with VBox. Using the same .vdi image at the same time is not possible since the file is locked by VBox.
