Hi folks. Last night I sat down and decided to try to get USB working in
VBox. About the only thing I need Windows for anymore is my film scanner
(Plustek OpticFilm 7200), for which there doesn't yet appear to be a Linux
driver.

Host: Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10)
Guest: Windows 2000 SP4
VirtualBox 1.5.2

It was a bit tricky at first... I followed the workaround for getting
/proc/bus/usb up on Gutsy (http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/747) and set up
a filter for the scanner, but it still wasn't working (I still got the
VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND error when I turned the device on). I eliminated
permission issues on the device file and was about to give up for the night
when I discovered by accident that if I saved the state of machine, closed
it, and restarted it, the device was suddenly recognized in the guest. I
found out later that if the device was powered on when I booted up, it
would work fine as well. It just appears that hot-plugging is not working
properly. No big deal for me.

The bigger problem is that when I try to start a preview scan (either in
the included SilverFast or with VueScan), I think I can hear one little
blip of a noise from the scanner, but then nothing else happens, and the
software within the guest locks up. I can tell both pieces of software
recognized the scanner properly.

Are there any tips or tweaks available for getting troublesome USB devices
working? I really don't want to have to resort to dual-boot just because of
this.

Thanks for any suggestions...

David Murphy
