I created the vmdk for the hard drive as follows: VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename /home/jd/.VirtualBox/Machines/winxp/winxp-hd.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/sdc -register
The drive /dev/sdc is bootable from the grub menu. No problems there. But when I boot it in vbox, windows proceeds to display those short bar codes then the display (of windows) goes black and stays black, except for the white stripe at the bottom where the bar codes were. On the host the cpu usage of vbox goes down to about 2%. Since this was the first boot attempt of a hard drive of windows in vbox, I have not had even the opportunity to install the guest add-ons.
