I have a USB drive which has windows on partition 1,
and linux on partition 2.
I tried to boot this drive in vbox.
1. Via grub: Grub complains about error in system disk.
2. I booted with windows installation CD and tried to
restore the windows boot (overwrite grub.
in the repair console I typed fixboot, and windows
   responds with
FIXBOOT cannot find the system drive, or the drive specified is not
valid.
Interestingly enough, the command diskpart does display the disk's 2
partitions. P1 is windows, and P2 is Unknown (to diskpart).
I dont quiet understand what fixboot means when it says it cannot
find the system drive; but I assume it means the drive that bios
detected.

Now I understand that the emulated IDE controllers PIIX3 and PIIX4
(currently using PIIX3) is not the controller used when the disk
was first created.
However, I DID run the MergeIDE package before I tried to
boot it in vbox. As you can see, to no avail.
I had no such problems with VMWare. All I had to do for VMWare
was to install the VMWare scsi controller driver on windows
when it is normally booted. When I boot it in VMWare, windows
has no problem finding the drive.

Needless to say, I had gotten a copy of the vbox add-on drivers
and installed them on normally booted windows before I tried to boot it
in vbox.

Cheers,

JD
