The VM was in a saved state I didn't want to discard, so I wondered whether it wouldn't be possible to allow access to parts of the machine configuration while saved, or at least to the "Devices" menu. If I can change those settings for a running VM, why not collect changes and propagate them when it's loaded again? The missing drive needn't have been a fatal error anyway. Just pop up a big ugly warning and let the user decide.
