I am doing likewise and get the choice of 800x600 or 640x480.

I also obtained 1280x800 with 7.10 for VM use on a laptop.

I think the secret lies in /etc/X11/xorg.conf but the contents seem to 
have changed somewhat from 7.10 to 8.04. I am more used to editing 
xorg.conf in the various flavours of PCLinuxOS to run within VirtualBox.

If I solve it I will post again, but others who are more knowledgeable 
may be along shortly.
