I confirm the graphics driver behavior you describe.
I also confirm the slow I/O of shared folders.

As I said in my opening, this XP install worked a whole lot better
with 1.5.6.
It seems the 1.6.0 release is not on par with the quality of previous
releases.
I have found when resizing my VM, the graphics driver with 1.6.0 is
not smooth like 1.5.6 I now get a momentary scrambling of the screen
when it is resized.
Also, saving a file via shared folders is slower.
I'm thinking of reverting to 1.5.6
