My host machine is Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.24, i386. I am running
VirtualBox 1.5.4, and my guest machine is Windows XP Professional.

It seems that when running in a virtual machine, WinXP loses its
ability to run programs from CDs that have SafeDisc 4.0 copy
protection.

In particular, I tried to run the Rosetta Stone language instruction
program (v2.2A), which comes on two CDs: the first CD (the
"application CD") installs correctly. But RS is set up in such a way
that the second CD be must the drive in order for the program to run;
and if I try to run the application, it complains with "Please insert
the correct CD-ROM". This is precisely the error message that is
reported if one were trying to run a pirated copy of the software, or
if one were trying to run the software from an iso image.
(Apparently, SafeDisc is designed so that the program only runs from
the original CD disc, burned by the manufacturer.)

Windows XP is not having any trouble seeing the CD drive, nor reading
data from it. (The directories and files on the CD appear in file
manager.) However, RS is not able to discern that the CD is the
original, and so will not run.

What is it about running WinXP in a virtual machine that would
interfere with its ability to run programs from CDs with SafeDisc? Is
there any hope that future versions of VirtualBox will fix this
compatibility problem?

Thanks,
Hans
