Situation:
VirtualBox on a Linux host, Windows 2000 guest, host interface networking.

First a little history: After trying upgrade to VBox 1.6.0 a while ago
the networking did not work at all. Searching in the net brought the
result, that this was an already known regression in that version
which was to be corrected in the next version. So I "downgraded" again
to the last working 1.5.x version and waited for that "next" version.
Actually I "forgot" to also downgrade the Windows Guest Additons to
that version, so I had a mixed, but working Vbox 1.5.x installation
with Guest Additions 1.6.0 in the Windows VM.

The awaited next version came then out as 1.6.2 and after installing
it on the Linux host the networking in the Windows VM really worked
again. As final touch I upgraded also the Guest Additions to 1.6.2 and
after that the Windows networking was not working anymore. The stored
connections to SMB shares did not work, I could not make new
connections, in fact, the Windows Network had disappeared completely
from the Network Neighborhood. And this situation was really
persistent now, downgrading to various older versions of VBox and/or
Guest Additions did not help this time. I finally managed to get rid
of the problem by completely deinstalling and reinstalling the Windows
Network Client/Server components on the Windows system.

Finally a little accidently I found also something in the Windows
Registry which I think was/is the cause for the problem:
There are keys
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order\ProviderOrder
 and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder\ProviderOrder
which in the VM contain now "LanmanWorkstation,VBoxSF,manWorkstation"
After the 1.6.2 Guest Additions installation these keys were missing
the LanmanWorkstation part and I suspect that the update process made
a little error here.
