All you need to do is create the VDI on another partition, specify it in 
VirtualBox's manager, then install to it. You are not stuck to 
~/.VirtualBox for VDIs and settings (I keep all my VDIs on a somewhat 
large external HDD). If you're talking about using a live partition on 
an HDD, that's another story and requires you to use VBoxManage. In such 
case, I'd suggest reading the manual.
