What I got to was a situation where 'ordinary' mass-storage USB
devices could be added without problems but any other devices (such as a
scanner) failed with the "The data is invalid" error.

I even tried it a second time with a completely clean install of the
XP guest.  I installed XP, did nothing except do all the Windows
Updates that came automatically (which include SP3) and then I
couldn't install my scanner.

The third time I installed the XP guest and almost immediately after
installation (and certainly before a lot of Windows Updates) I
installed the scanner with no problem and it has continued to work as
I had added other stuff and Windows Updates.
