Unfortunately, saved states of versions prior to 1.6.0 were not
compatible with future versions. Older download pages contained a
hint that you should drop all snapshots and saved states before you
upgrade VirtualBox.

To solve your problem you could do the following: Install the old
version of VirtualBox (1.5.6 is still available on
www.virtualbox.org/download), shut down all VMs properly, merge all
snapshots. After that, upgrade VirtualBox (I suggest you to upgrade
to 2.0.6) and you should be able to start your VMs again.

Starting with version 1.6.0, saved states should be usable with newer
versions of VBox as well.

Kind regards,

Frank
