First check if you run out of RAM, i.e. you gave your VM more RAM than
wasn't used by your HOST OS.

Other thing: Try another ISO, download one of the many Live Linux CDs,
or an older Solaris, or...

If your OpenSolaris has some kind of media check, I would run it, Daniel
already hinted this.

The last thing that comes to my mind are the settings: Have you enabled
on of the many CPU-related settings? PAE/NX, IO APIC, APCI, ...? Maybe
one of them screws things up.
