I had a similar problem upgrading from 2.1.4 to 2.2 (the 2.2 installer would run through and then rollback without returning any useful information for the failure) . My workaround was to use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301 <mailto:[email protected]> to nuke the entry in add/remove programs and manually un-installed the virtualbox network card from device manager before installing 2.2. Seemed to work ok but I haven't used virtualbox much after the upgrade (This also ignores the usb driver but I guess upgrading the usb driver doesn't have as many issues as upgrading the network driver).
