I too have an nVidia card on this machine.  My driver version is
180.29  

I went to the nVidia download website and found the latest driver
(180.51) for my graphics card.  One of the highlighted fixes is the
following: 

   Fixed occasional X driver memory management performance problems
   when a composite manager is running. 

Doesn't specifically say `this bug will eat all of your RAM' but it
was the closest comment regarding memory.  :)

I've downloaded the driver and will install it shortly.  

FWIW, my monitor reports no significant memory increase yet.  I'll
re-run it after I upgrade my driver.
