The further step that needed taking was to check that the current
user was still a member of the vboxusers and usb groups.
Somehow those settings had been lost, and as every other aspects of
VBox 2.2.4 were working perfectly I did not at first check them.
Now restored and working well. Apologies to 2.2.4....
