yes, I know all the caveats. What I wanted something simple. starting point is a laptop running Windows 7 and ubuntu. I don't use Windows 7 for anything but a basic application platform. The Ubuntu side had two partitions home and root so that I could upgrade the OS without disturbing my home environment. Now that I'm forced into Windows I would like to run a virtual machine with linux and have access to my home partition. there will never be simultaneous access to the same partition because that would be bad bad bad.

Oh I go to the manual I get results like:

C:\Users\esj>"c:\Program Files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" internalcomman
ds listpartitions -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive0
VirtualBox Command Line Management Interface Version 3.0.2
(C) 2005-2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
All rights reserved.

Error opening the raw disk: VERR_ACCESS_DENIED

I don't know enough about Windows 7 and its permissions to know how to get around this or even if I should. Does this mean I should run virtual box as administrator? Is there some permission I should give to myself?

Anyway, a clue would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
