While the advice to uninstall virtualbox 2.1.4 in order to upgrade to
3.0.8 is correct, the advice to destroy the disk allocations, (if by
those you mean the guest hard disks), is incorrect. There's no reason
to delete your guest machines' hard disks, before upgrading to
virtualbox 3.x.

Unless you have some reason to use virtualbox OSE, (which is what
ubuntu provides), I'd also suggest getting the PUEL version of
virtualbox from virtualbox.org, and going with that.
