Hi all,
i am new to virtualbox and debian, so pleas be kind:
I get the message "connect: Network is unreachable" when i ping my
router from my debian (in guest system).
Host=Windows XP Prof.
Guest=Debian lenny
The GUI is in german so my be the translation is not exact.
Note that the step-by-step tutorial is written by my self (for my self)
and is the result of my investigations so far.
I configured my virtual machine this way:
1.1.click "new" button
1.2.click "next" button
1.3.enter "phpmyboxCI" (a unique name)
1.4.select "Linux" as "type of guest system"
1.5.select "Debian" as "version"
1.6.click "next" button
1.7.select 256 MB
1.8.click "next" button
1.9.check "Boot Harddrive (Primary Master)"
1.10.select "Create Harddrive"
1.11.click "next" button
1.12.click "next" button
1.13.select "Dynamic Growing Medium"
1.14.click "next" button
1.15.select a location for the file (virtual harddrive image)
1.16.enter the virtual machine name as image name ("phpmyboxCI")
1.17.select 8GB
1.18.click "next" button
1.19.click "finish" button
1.20.click "finish" button
1.21.select "phpmyboxCI"
1.22.click "edit" button
1.23.check "add CD/DVD-Drive"
1.24.select "ISO-Image"
1.25.select "debian-503-i386-netinst.iso"
1.26.select "Netzwork"
1.27.select "network brigde" as "Connected to:"
1.28.select the ethernet card of your host system
1.29.click "OK"
I used this virtual box:

I installed my debian this way:
2.1.start "phpmyboxCI" (the virtual machine)
2.2.select "Install"
2.3.select "English" on "Choose language"
2.4.select "other" on "Choose a country, territory or area"
2.5.selcet "Europe" on "Choose a continent or region"
2.6.select "Germany" on "Choose a country, territory or area"
2.7.select "Germany" as "Keymap to use"
2.8.enter "VBphpmyboxCI" (as host name)
2.9.enter "virtualbox.local" (as domain name)
2.10.select "Guided – use entire disk" (as partitioning method)
2.11.select "IDE1 master (hda) – 8,6. GB VBOX HARDDISK" ("Select disk to
partition")
2.12.select "All files in one partition (recommended for new users)"
(partitioning scheme)
2.13.select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk"
2.14.select "Yes" (Write the changes to disks?)
2.15.enter "publicRootPassword" (as password for user "root")
2.16.re-enter "publicRootPassword"
2.17.enter "personFirstname personLastname"
2.18.enter "person001"
2.19.enter "publicPerson001Password"
2.20.select "Germany" ("Debian archive mirror country")

When i ping from my debian to 192.168.8.1 (my router, AVM Fritz!Box
7170) i get the message "connect: Network is unreachable". The IP of my
host is 192.168.8.111. I get the same error when i ping it from my guest
(debian). Firewall from my host is disabled (windows XP firewall) and
zone alarm is disabled, too.
When i run "ipconfig" on debian it get "-bash: ipconfig: command not
found".
When i run "route -n" i get "Destination Gateway Genmask Falgs Metric
Ref Use Iface" but nothing more.
What do i need to do to get my debian ping my router well (to get
internet access in debian)?
