There was no problem. It's just the case that under GNU/Linux, when you insert media, you need to use the mount command to attach the file system on that media to your directory structure. Your questions indicate that you haven't done much, if any reading up on how to use gnu/linux from the text console. I would strongly suggest that before you go any farther in using your debian guest, you should browse over to: http://www.debian.org/doc/ I know debian's documentation is long, and tells you more than you'll probably ever want to know, but it's very well written in my opinion, and addresses the kinds of questions you've been asking here in detail.
