Failed to load unit 'HGCM' (VERR_INVALID_PARAMETER) message when I tried to start them. I pressed the Discard button in the virtual box control window and... voila... it did not destroy the guest machines but only the corrupted or otherwise unusable snapshots that were preventing them from loading! So everything is ok and I am a happy man! I am still puzzled that I was so utterly stonewalled by this list on this subject for nearly two weeks... must be some German rules of etiquette that I broke without knowing it. I apologize. I am very happy that I lucked out and got going again on my own.
