As your guest is Ubuntu I assume you are using the default GNOME
desktop. Have a look at the menu bar at the top. Somewhere there
should be a mixer applet.

You could install the alsaplayer (apt-get install alsaplayer-gtk,
make sure to install alsaplayer-alsa as well). Then try to play
some audio file using the alsaplayer. Use the mixer applet or
alsamixer (from terminal) to set the volume of the mixer. Make
sure that the volume of your host mixer is set to a sane value
as well.
