here is what I do:
edit authlib/Makefile
Replace
CRYPTLIBS = -lcrypt
With
CRYPTLIBS = -lcrypt -L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient
edit sqwebmail/Makefile
replace
LIBS = -lcrypt
with
LIBS = -lcrypt -L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient
On some machines, like solaris, you have to also add -lsocket -lnsl
