Dot in userid valid?

Not sure why it is so late in my experience that I see this or if I'm
mistaken in my observation, but this is my question....

Is it possible to create a pop userid with a period in it?

My tests lead me to suspect it is not.

Though qmailadmin allows me to create one.

I'm about to coach my domains to use this.

Any observations?
