POP3 refuses to authenticate

Every time one of my users connects through the pop3d supplied with 
qmail, they get 'Unable to enter $HOME/Maildir' errors... any ideas as 
to how I have to config pop3d to fix this? I've set the auth method to /
bin/vchkpw, so it's not that, but I'm wondering if qmail needs a 
recompile.
