Slow POP3 connects

I'm having a problem with slow pop3 connects.  An strace shows that tcpserver goes 
through a loop three times.  On the third try it apparently works and runs qmail-popup.

I'm going to assume that it has something to do with a dns lookup or something, but I 
have no idea what the problem is.  DNS appears to be working ok.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?
