[vchkpw] What does \ in qmail Startscript mean?

Hi All,   just a simple question, look at the qmail start-script there are some lines like this:   #!/bin/sh MAXCON=100 exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 3000000 \ /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -v -R -H -c "$MAXCON" \ ....   What does the backlash \ mean?
