Go, figure out what 'catch-all-mode' means _in hard facts_.
'Catch all' could be achieved by simply putting

/var/vpopmail/domains/virtual.domain/postmaster/

into .qmail-default too.

Using 'vdelivermail' only adds the possibility to use user mail dirs
without requirenment of one seperate dot-qmail file for _every_ user,
because 'vdelivermail' looks up vpasswd.cdb (or MySQL database) if there
are any delivery instructions for that particular e-mail-address.
Additionally it looks up for dot-qmail files in users mail dir, which
could be achieved differently too (well, quite more complex to handle,
but not impossible).

So your 'Catch all' situation is only _one specialized_ below many
others. It's only the instruction to 'not bounce but store' to
vdelivermail if it's lookups fail.
