aha, now I got it.
you controlled it over tcpserver command. Oh my god.
tcpserver opts host port prog
Here's mine.  Also, PLEASE READ life with qmail.  It has this very same
thing in there and it explains all the components of it.

env - PATH="/var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin" \
tcpserver -q -H -R 0 pop3 \
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup mail.mydomain.com \
/usr/local/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir 2>&1 &
