this is the relevant process running on the server:
/usr/bin/tcpserver -p -v -R -x /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb -c 40 -u 201 -g 200 smtp /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd
mail.dubuquepeterbilt.com /var/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw /bin/true

If you're using one of the newer smtp auth patches, you shouldn't have a hostname between qmail-smtpd and the call to vchkpw.

What happens when you telnet from localhost (like SquirrelMail) and try to do a manual SMTP session? Can you relay?
