Some very smart person - I'm REALLY sorry I cannot easily find the link to give proper credit - posted this patch "out there" a few weeks ago. I don't think it's become mainstream yet, but I literally just went through the same problem with authlib 0.59.3 and vpopmail 5.4.17. Yes, the patch works; no I don't know why.
