Tom, programs calling vpopmail to determine quota usage (including chkuser), pretty much all use vmaildir_readquota, which returns the quota usage as a percentage. They are not concerned with the exact numbers. Programs reading or writing the maildirsize file should follow the specification, and as a result, they should not be impacted by the size of the values in the file. If anyone does come across a program which the 5.4.33 version seems to break, please let me know. I will be looking over Inter7 software and creating patches for the 5.4.33 version, as necessary.
