No doubt, but $! is still a Good Thing.
The only problem with it is that it leads us into tempatation to muck
with VTL in similar ways for other purposes. The problems with WM in
this respect are very clear, and $! is a great way to fix it.
I wonder if we can find another way to solve the problem, or (sorry
Christoph) if this is really a problem. I mean, if this is something
you would need only in debugging and testing, then the log msg should be
fine, right?
