I have to admit it was a bit like you say (frustration overdose, I guess).
Still, the macros are shity at the moment. I can't believe that no one
else has problems with them.
The stranger issue was changing a template with a macro while the web
server was running and then having some changes showing up, but the
changes inside the macros not being visible at all. Velocity seems to
cache the macros and not being aware when their source was changed. When
developing macros that are private to a page, this is quite inconvenient.
For a moment, I was missing FreeMarker.
