Ok - a fix is in, and all should be well. 

Daniel should be happy -> a reference passed into a VM that is really
null will render as the passed-in reference rather than the in-VM
reference.

Paulo should be happy ->  a reference passed into a VM that is really
null will behave properly in a #if().

I will update the docs so this is *lucidly* clear, although it is now
the expected behavior again (assuming I didn't screw up...), so special
docs that say specifically that 'all is well' seem kind of silly...
