The last version of the Number-Patch: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg06642.html
The patch can be improved performance-wise (using BigDecimal too much) - I would do so after the first patch went into the development tree.
BTW the whole thread (above) was a good example of discussion on how to get velocity-development back on track again... ;)
I wanted to repeat my call to action on Velocity, which was buried in a thread "new development" on the user list.> But Geir says he's going to try to get some patches in. I say... give him a chance.
Despite the loud vocalizations of some, I have a feeling that this project is not dead yet There's a good size user base, and a number of talented developers out there who have created patches for their own system. It'd be great if we could get some of these public, maybe create a list.
Two reasons people may be resistant:
--Some developers (myself included) are concerned that the patches may not be committed. This is clearly has been an issue. The number of active committers are few (1 or 2, depending how you count it).
Don't get me wrong here, but we had exactly the same situations some times now. Users / coders with patches or interest in development started a discussion, the discussion went on for some time, people started to think things will change and they didn't... But I'll try it again ;)
By the way, I do believe that new committers will come. How do we get new committers? By selecting from those who contribute good code and ideas. Don't believe me that
the current committers will put in the patches? Submit anyway. Others will still be able to make use of the code, and eventually we'll stage a rebellion and take over the CVS access :-)
;) Jon Scott Stevens will tell you something like:
"You are always welcome to fork the project or do what you want with it. We are not stopping you from doing that at all."
Quote taken from http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg06631.html
I'm optimistic about the state of Velocity and the Velocity Community.
I once was too :(
The user base is terrific. My personal feeling is that the V. dev community has been in a bit of a rut this past year, both in terms of committing and in terms of discussion. I suggest we drop the negative discussion for a while and focus on how WE, the Velocity community, can help each other and the project get some new momentum.
Good point. I'm quite pessimistic about that, but we'll see...
