Thanks for the link, which I read before posting. There's nothing in 
there against posting announcements, which this was, or even 
"advertising" for that matter which this was not, especially when are 
clearly relevant to the list. The guideslies don't mention relevancy 
BTW.

Depends whom you ask: clearly no one can stop you from posting
sales/marketing notices for your products.  I like it when people obey
the guidelines for Apache mailing lists (as defined here:
http://jakarta.apache.org/site/mail.html), which do not include
unsolicited advertising. 

It's nice that your product is free and open-source, and congratulations
on having a version available for the public.  But I get so much mail on
these mailing lists (I'm a moderator for a few as well, including a
couple that are have much more traffic than velocity-user) that I'm
sensitive to (what are, in my opinion) inappropriate uses.
