No choice? But what about Applets, Flash, XWT, SVG? XML or PDF or hell
even postscript? If it's so bad why didn't all the engineers rise up
and adopt a "better" standard, and all the end users around the world
throw us a parade in celebration? HTML sucks from my point of view, as
I write very thick looking thin clients. Dynamic web sites are NOT the
documents of scrolling content with a few black and white pictures
envisioned by Berners-Lee...
We deal with it not because there's no choice, but because it's the
popular choice. Just like Britney Spears. Except Britney Spears isn't
a psuedo-standard that engineers are forced to dirty their hands on
(teehee).
Death isn't chosen, so bad example.
Taxes are, though! And given the taxing conventions chosen by free and
democratic nations and states-- yes, you would have to conclude that
taxes are "popular" in at least one sense. However not "popular" like
Britney Spears. Perhaps "popular" like HTML... ah sigh, the fun you can
have when you question what the definition of "is" is. ;-)
Instead of "popular" let's use "prevalent". HTML is prevalent because
your average Joe can use it and get his job done. So can a developer
for that matter, albeit with some minor cussing along the way.

Of course it is 100% popular since people had no choice.
<LOL>
You beat me too it, Daniel. I was going to make the same point.
Of course, if the fact that we all deal with HTML because there is no
choice is not the same thing as it being "popular". At least I don't
think so.
If that were the case, the most "popular" things would be death and
taxes. Rather odd use of the word "popular" ... :-)
