http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/betwixt/ and no, i've never used it either. but it seems to me that the combination of this and digester (http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/digester/ ...which i have used, and i believe betwixt can automatically generate rules for) would be quite "fault tolerant".
