My
understanding is the reason gauze dressings are removed at 48hrs is because the
gauze is a breeding ground for bacteria, it does not let the skin breath like a
TSM does, moisture is retained and germies grow. NOT because we can or cannot
see the site. Therefore, as stated in INS standards, any gauze under a TSM is
a gauze dressing and needs to be changed in 48hrs. Chris

gauze covers the insertion site so that it is not visible........then the
dressing needs to be changed q24-48H. If the gauze is used to stabilize
the non coring needle, the insertion site should still be visible........thus
