NICUs use either povidone iodine of CHG (either alcohol or water based)for central lines.  The alcohol in the CHG preparation can lead to burns in the very low birth weight infants in the first week(s) of life.  There is a concern that use of CHG is off label use, but a large percentage of what is done in the NICU is off label and I see more and more NICUs using it.  There has been extensive use of CHG products in other countries without significant problems encountered.  If you need more information, contact me .

Can I have some feed back on the type of skin prep used in the neonatal units before the insertion of a vascular access device?
