This article should help. I am not aware of anything since this was published:

1.      Frey, A., Drawing blood from vascular access devices: Evidence-based practice. Journal of Infusion Nursing, 2003. 26(5): p. 285-295.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying about the blood drawing with a blunt cannula. How can they puncture the rubber stopper on the top of a vacuum tube with a blunt cannula? I was not aware that this was possible because the stopper is not pre-slit to accept the cannula. There are devices designed specifically for the purpose of transferring blood from a syringe to a vacuum tube without a needle. Are they not using one of these devices? Lynn

Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions for the group. I work for a LTC pharmacy and a couple of issues associated with lab draws came up at an in-service lately.

·         When drawing vancomycin trough levels through a PICC line,  are there concerns about the accuracy of the vanco trough if it is drawn through the same lumen as it is infused through?  If you are drawing through the same lumen, what is the discard? 10 ml?

·         Also one of our homes is using syringes with a blunt cannula to draw and transfer blood to the lab tubes.  The cannula twists off (luer connector) for the draw and they re-attach it and access the tube with the blunt cannula.  The blood will transfer without pressing on the plunger.  It seems to work okay in that it is "needleless" without splashes.  Am I missing something?

Thank you all in advance
